Military was early ambition

Among the 64 "ambassadors in blue" graduates of the Marine Security Guard School's Class of 2006 was Lance Cpl. Derek "Shady" Brady of Joliet.

Brady successfully completed training and is officially a Marine Security Guard, assigned to guard a U.S. Embassy overseas. During his three-year overseas tour, he will serve in three locations.

At the end of his tour, he will have the option of re-enlisting.

Weekly Recap Of Global Events

Two weeks after the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was executed, his half brother and the former head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court were hanged before dawn Monday. Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half brother and Awad Hamed al-Bandar were found guilty along with Saddam Hussein for the killing of 148 Shiite Muslims of the town of Dujail following a failed 1982 assassination attempt on the former leader.

The executions drew expressions of concern from among the international community. UN and EU leaders strongly condemned the executions in Baghdad. UN spokesman Michele Montas said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "regrets that despite pleas from himself and the high commissioner for human rights to spare the lives of the two co-defendants, they were both executed." UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour also condemned the hangings, saying that they could "make it more difficult to have a complete judicial accounting of other, equally horrendous, crimes committed in Iraq".

Wacoan Returns Home

Waco, Texas - University of Houston safeties coach Clay Jennings, a graduate of nearby La Vega High School, has been hired as Baylor's cornerbacks coach, Bears' head coach Guy Morriss announced tonight.

"We are excited to have Clay joining our staff and I know he's thrilled to be returning to Central Texas," Morriss said. "He's a top-notch recruiter and I like the fact that he's a native Texan who has recruited both Dallas and Houston. We plan on turning him loose in those areas."

Jennings has spent the past two seasons (2005 and 2006) as Houston's safeties coach, helping coach Art Briles' program to back-to-back bowl appearances (2005 Fort Worth Bowl and 2006 Liberty Bowl) and the 2006 Conference USA championship. In 2006, Cougars' free safety Will Gulley earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors and freshman safety Brandon Brinkley was named to the league's all-freshman honor squad.
