| Sen. Martinez takes GOP leadership role
Republicans elected Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida to lead their party today, and he challenged them to convince voters that the GOP has "answers to their everyday problems." Martinez's election as General Chairman of the Republican National Committee came after a smattering of protests over his position on the issue of immigration. VISD superintendent recommends building five new schools
In his recommendations for facilities improvements in the Victoria School District, superintendent Bob Moore recommends building two new high schools, one new middle school, two new elementary schools and converting the existing MHS senior campus into a District Events Center and Stroman campus into what he called a Victoria Area Center for Advanced Learning. The $159 million plan was presented in several PowerPoint slides as Moore stressed the importance of having good facilities and how students and parents alike will respond to them. He said that he has seen first hand what students' performance can be like when they are in a place where they want to be to learn. Moore said parents and students have safety concerns, location concerns, concerns about inadequate and aging facilities, all of which have a hand in declining enrollment.
Boyce, Peaker tops at hoops
At the Radisson Invitational Tournament in Saskatoon, the savvy senior led the T-Wolves to a 2-1 mark finishing second to the nationally ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The poised point guard was named to the tournament All-Star team. "Tara is playing very well right now," said the T-Wolves coach. "The most consistent part of Tara's game is her ability to find open players without (committing) turnovers. She can do this because of her speed, strength, and athleticism." Not only is the concurrent education major a leader on the court, but so, too in the Lakehead community. "Tara is a true example of what a leader is," said Tom Warden, the LU athletic director. "She has become ingrained in the community. Her bright smile, her infectiously positive attitude and sparkling personality are the face of our program in the city of Thunder Bay.
